Maths Stuff 1: Tomography

Hello my beautiful friends!

I have decided to start a new series on my blog called 'Maths Stuff'. For each post, I will research and outline a maths-related topic as well as provide resources for further reading. For those considering studying mathematics or a mathematics-related course at university, you can use this as a supercurricular activity. For those not considering anything mathematics-related whatsoever, I hope this is interesting nonetheless! I am creating this series to help both my audience and myself because this series will help my own supercurricular research and is something for my personal statement.

Today's blog post is about Tomography. One of the lectures in my Cambridge Masterclass was about Tomography and I found it really interesting, so decided to research into it further. Tomography is "the study of geometrical properties and spatial relations unaffected by the continuous change of shape or size of figures". Essentially, it is the mathematics behind CAT scans, GPS and land-mine detection.

Topology is mainly focused on integrals, specifically the Radon transform and Fourier transform. The Radon transform is relatively straightforward and, although the Fourier transform is degree-level mathematics, I grasped a basic understanding of it from wider reading.

I recommend reading and making detailed notes on this topic because, alongside being interesting, if mentioned in your personal statement, this complex mathematics ensures you outshine other candidates and is a good discussion point for interviews.
