Chat 5: Vegan, Cruelty Free, Plastic Free... How have I changed my lifestyle?

Hello my beautiful friends!

A quick disclaimer... Through this post I am not trying to boast about my lifestyle, nor am I trying to shame anyone for their lifestyle. I am simply sharing how I have implemented these lifestyle changes to help those who consciously want to change their lifestyle in this way. I understand that these changes are not possible for everyone. Equally, I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and, although their opinion may counter mine, I respect that.

Today's post is going to be a bit of a life update. Recently, I have made a few lifestyle changes because I aim to live in a more ethical way that is going to reduce damage to the Earth. In this post, I hope to outline how I am making these lifestyle changes, so I am focusing less on my reasoning. If you would like a blog post about why I have made these lifestyle changes, please do leave a comment.

The first change I have made to my life recently is becoming a vegan. I have been vegetarian for a number of years and I have been drinking plant milk instead of cow's milk for a few years too, so my transition to veganism may be different in comparison to someone who was previously a meat eater; however, veganism is possible for everyone.

I live at home with my family, who are all meat eaters, but they are all rather supportive of my veganism (even if they do joke about it from time to time in a harmless way). Being vegan meant educating my parents as much as educating myself because they do shop for my food and often cook my dinner as we eat as a family at dinner time. This meant I usually went on the food shop with my mum and chose what vegan items I wanted for my breakfast and lunch as well as picking out some vegan staples for dinner. If you would like a vegan breakfast, vegan lunchbox and/or vegan essentials blog post, leave a comment!

In support of my vegan lifestyle, I no longer wear leather or suede shoes, nor do I wear woolen clothing. I donated all of my leather shoes to charity, so currently wear plastic and canvas shoes such as my vegan Doc Martens and Converse. I did not own any woolen clothing, so this was not a problem. In future, I will choose to not buy shoes and clothing made from animal products.

The second lifestyle change I have made is trying to use as many cruelty free products as possible. The majority of my products were already cruelty free, so, for me, this lifestyle change meant simply throwing out or donating any of my products that were tested on animals. This did require research; however, information about animal testing is quite easy to find online. In future, I aim to make a conscious decision to only buy cruelty free products. I would like to purchase products that are all cruelty free, vegan and natural; however, I feel that this is not possible with my current income as these products are usually more expensive. If you do know of any reasonably-priced products that are all of these things, please do let me know.

My final major lifestyle change is becoming as plastic free as possible. Unfortunately, this is difficult in a world dominated by single-use plastic packaging. The steps I have made towards achieving a plastic-free lifestyle involves using a BPA free reusable water bottle and using canvas shopping bags. I bought a Chilly's bottle, which is slightly pricey, but should be a durable. In terms of canvas shopping bags, I use the canvas bags I was given on university open days and visits, which may be a good idea for those of you who are a similar age and have also collected many university canvas bags.

I hope this blog post has been interesting and useful, regardless of your views. As mentioned, if you'd like a blog post about why I chose these lifestyle changes, please do leave a comment! 💚
