Mental Health 2: Coping with Exam Stress

Hello my beautiful friends! This is only my second mental health post and I aim for this blog to be about both academia and mental health equally. I do hope to post more mental health-related posts in the future, especially as I have just started CBT again. Stress is a natural aspect of exams and, since exam season is upon us, I have decided to share my own tips about how to reduce stress during exam season. As someone with existing mental health problems, I understand how mental health can deteriorate during exam season, so I am here to offer advice about looking after your mental health during exam season too. Your mental health is your priority. I hear this advice often and I cannot stress this enough. Your mental health IS your priority! There is the opportunity to re-take exams and I talk about this below, but you cannot 're-take' your well being. If you are feeling low, reach out to teachers, family and friends and, if you feel too mentally exhausted to revise, don...

Academia 11: My Cambridge Masterclass Experience

Image
Hello my beautiful friends! If you follow my Instagram , you may know I attended the Mathematics Masterclass at the University of Cambridge on Saturday (21/04/18). I had a lot of requests to share my experience of the Masterclass, so I have decided to write a blog post about it. All of my opinions about the day's activities are completely honest (and I hope you enjoy the photos). I travelled to Cambridge by train and the journey was very pleasant (not too crowded, decent facilities and a well-stocked refreshments trolley). The train journey lasted two hours, so I did some sixth form work and chatted to some other people I met on the train, who were also attending the Masterclass. As soon as I arrived a Cambridge, it felt like home. I note, this is the first time I have been to Cambridge. People say you get a 'gut feeling' when you sense a university is right for you and this was my gut feeling. Cambridge is busy with both modern and old features, which really a...

Academia 10: A Complete Guide to Choosing a University

Image
Hello my beautiful friends! I am currently looking at universities because I start applying to universities in September and the majority of university open days are during June and July. I have decided to write this blog post to outline what characteristics I am looking at whilst choosing my universities. Obviously, there are many other options aside from university including apprenticeships, foundation courses and work; however, I  have not looked into these options, so felt unqualified to talk about them. Nonetheless, I hope your find my perspective on choosing a university both useful and interesting. 1. Russell Group vs. Non-Russell Group A Russell Group university is a group of 24 research universities, which are viewed as the 'top' universities in the UK and are often favoured by employers. Therefore, if you are considering entering a competitive career, especially at a major company, attending a Russell Group may favour you. Reputably, these universities are co...

Academia 9: Study (and Eat) with Me

Image
Hello my beautiful friends! Today I have decided to write a combined 'Study with Me' and 'What I Eat in a Day' post inspired by a recent video from one of my favourite Youtubers, Holly Gabrielle (a second year Oxford student). This post took place on Wednesday 4th April. Breakfast For breakfast I ate banana porridge (containing a banana, oats and almond milk) with a nectarine and cinnamon and a green tea. I try to eat a healthy breakfast before a revision day with lots of fruit because I believe healthy food often leads to better concentration. Hunger pangs can be distracting, so I ensure my breakfast is wholesome and filling too! Morning Study Session At the start of each study day I ensure I have a full bottle of water. Staying hydrated is very important for concentration! Having a bottle of water ready at the start of the day prevents you procrastinating or wasting time later in the day to get water. I began my day reviewing some physics revis...

Chat 2: New Years resolutions, success or failure? (First Quarter of 2018)

Hello my beautiful friends! So... I forgot to do a monthly update regarding my New Years resolutions as promised , so I've decided to review how successful they have been during the first quarter of this year. Can you believe we've complete one quarter of 2018 already? 1. Focus on my mental health. This year I have definitely made progress regarding looking after my mental health. In January, I self-referred to counselling again and, although I am still on the waiting list, this shows I am making steps. Also, I have started opening up to my parents, who have supported me, and I have decided to do only what I want to do rather than what I have to do in my life. 2. Focus on the positive in my life. I believe that the 'A Line a Day' spread in my bullet journal has aided this resolution. Writing down a positive thing about everyday has enabled me to appreciate even the smallest good things in my life. Without this spread, I believe this resolution would be largely...
