Chat 5: Vegan, Cruelty Free, Plastic Free... How have I changed my lifestyle?

Image
Hello my beautiful friends! A quick disclaimer... Through this post I am not trying to boast about my lifestyle, nor am I trying to shame anyone for their lifestyle. I am simply sharing how I have implemented these lifestyle changes to help those who consciously want to change their lifestyle in this way. I understand that these changes are not possible for everyone. Equally, I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and, although their opinion may counter mine, I respect that. Today's post is going to be a bit of a life update. Recently, I have made a few lifestyle changes because I aim to live in a more ethical way that is going to reduce damage to the Earth. In this post, I hope to outline how I am making these lifestyle changes, so I am focusing less on my reasoning. If you would like a blog post about why I have made these lifestyle changes, please do leave a comment. The first change I have made to my life recently is becoming a vegan. I have been v...

Mental Health 6: Depression

Hello my beautiful friends! As mentioned in my previous post, today's post is going to be a depression factfile. All of the information in this post has been researched and I will reference the websites used at the end of the post. Again, if you believe you have depression, I recommend visiting your GP to access the necessary help and support. Like my previous post, this post will be separated into the categories definition, symptoms, causes, treatment and contacts. Definition The Oxford English Dictionary defines depression as "A mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep." Symptoms Like anxiety, symptoms of depression can be split into two categories: mental and physical as well as social. Mental symptoms include Low mood and sadness Feeling hopeless and helpless Low self-esteem Feeling tearful...

Mental Health 5: Anxiety

Hello my beautiful friends! 6 in 100 people are experiencing General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Today's post is going to be an anxiety factfile. I realise I have not posted a factual anxiety post on my blog as I have only written about my own experiences. Of course, different people experience anxiety disorder in different ways, so this post offers more generalised advice. I simply searched "anxiety disorder" on Google and used the top resources to compile my factfile. I will link all resources at the end of the post if you would like further advice; however, I would recommend speaking to your GP if you feel you have anxiety disorder because you will be able to access a wider variety of resources through this. The post will be split into 4 sections: a definition, symptoms, causes, treatment and self-help. Definition Wikipedia defines anxiety disorders as "a group of mental disorders characterized by significant feelings of anxiety and fear" (do not worry, t...

Maths Stuff 2: Alex's Adventures in Numberland (Part 1)

Image
Hello my beautiful friends! In preparation for my Oxford interview (if I do get an interview), I am slowly re-reading and making notes on the books included in my personal statement. Usually, the maths interviews are focused on your mathematical ability rather than your personal statement, but it is useful to have a good understanding of these books to ensure that you can confidently talk about the topics if necessary. In this post, I am going to summarise the first half of Alex's Adventure's in Numberland by Alex Bellos, so be prepared for a second half. I am going to write about the topics I found the most important and interesting. Through this book, I discovered that humans instinctively assume numbers are on a logarithmic scale as this is a key survival instinct. Currently, this is shown by tribes such as the Munduruku. Due to this, animals in the wild have better approximation skills than humans whilst humans have a number system instead. Whilst animals do not natu...

Mental Health 4: My Body

Hello my beautiful friends! As mentioned, I will be writing mainly mental health posts throughout October. Today's post is about my body. Whilst I have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder, I feel most people experience some form of body dysmorphia during their lifetime. I have decided to talk about my own experience to hopefully help those with similar feelings. As stated in previous posts, I am not a doctor nor a counsellor, so I am not in any position to advise people regarding their mental well-being. Through this post and my other posts in this mental health series, including those throughout October, I am simply sharing my own personal experience and what I have learnt through this. Let's start with Year 7. I was 11 years old when I first remember developing an awareness of my weight and what my body looked like in comparison to other people's bodies. During this time, I was rather thin for three main reasons: 1) I was having a growth spurt, 2) the vomitin...
